I’m Susan Lee.
On this episode, we speak to one of the most influential
female recording artists in Asia.
The first Asian artist to perform at the Oscars,
and she’s also been billed as one of the top 25
sexiest pop divas performing today.
This week, we meet Coco Lee.
As a young girl growing up in San Francisco,
Coco Lee dreamed of being a doctor.
Her performance at a singing competition in Hong Kong
proved a turning point in her ambitions.
For nearly two decades now, Coco Lee’s been pulling
in the fans with her unique mix of pop, soul, and R&B.
Coco Lee tells us about all that,
but first, she describes what it was like
to command the stage at the Oscars.
That was really one of the most unforgettable moments
in my life, because as a kid, I always watched the Oscar,
and never imagined one day I would be on the other side,
actually performing, and billions of people watching me instead.
And I was really, really, really nervous,
being the first Asian artist,
Chinese artist, to perform on there.
And I remember I was so nervous,
my heart was beating so fast,
that I could not hear the music.
I really could not hear the music.
And there was a screen that was blocking me
right before I started.
And then, the moment the screen went up,
and I saw Tom Cruise, I saw Tom Hanks,
I saw, I mean, the biggest stars of Hollywood watching me,
all of a sudden, I’m like, that’s it,
I’m gonna own this stage.
I have to own and command the stage.
And I was in the zone, and I just felt very comfortable,
and I performed A Crouching Tiger,
the “A Love Before Time”, and I remember the moment
the song ended, I was like snapping out of that moment,
and I saw Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt,
and I’m like,
okay, hurry up and get off the stage.
But yeah, it was a really great moment.
Now, you almost didn’t even wanna sing “A Love Before Time”.
Ah, you know about that!
Yes, almost did not sing the song.
I just finished the album “So Crazy”,
which is a more pop, hip-hop album.
That was in my hip-hop phase, and the boss came back to me
with this song, beautiful song, a ballad,
that has a Chinese theme, and he said,
“This is gonna be the theme song to a kung fu movie.”
And I said, “Well, but we’re done with the album,
“I don’t know if this fits into the theme.”
And my mother listened to it, actually,
my mother listens to all the songs that I pick,
and she listened to it, she said, “Coco,
“you must do the song!”
And so, of course, like a good Chinese daughter,
I listened to my mother, and it was amazing
that this song became the biggest song of the year,
and brought me all the way to the Oscars.
Now, at that moment, at the Oscars,
did you feel weighed by the pressure,
knowing that you were the first Asian artist
representing Asia?
Tremendous amount of pressure.
I remember the day that my manager called me and said,
“Your song is nominated for an Oscar.”
I said, “Get outta here, you’re joking,
you’re pulling my leg.
He said, no, seriously,
because we did not promote the song.
So I was really surprised that the Academy noticed the song,
and so, and then, of course, all the press
from the entire Asia, they were all very focused on this,
because this is a very big moment for the Chinese.
And so, I was very focused on,
I have to give a great performance.
Whether we win or not, that’s not the important issue.
It’s just, I gotta look good, I gotta represent,
and really sing my heart out, and hopefully I did that.
Now, that was 2001.
Tell me what it means today to be
a recording artist in Asia.
You know, the market’s very different.
Albums, when we release albums, it’s not so much
the sales, the number, the record sales.
It’s more like, it’s a tool for us to keep the exposure,
to have something new, so we can have
maybe a concert tour.
So it’s a totally different market
of how we used to do albums.
The budget’s a lot smaller right now.
But I’m very lucky, because I have experience
when the market is very prosperous,
and even though right now it’s not as good,
but it’s a different way of looking at it.
The internet has made music worldwide.
That means you can be in a very, very small city in China,
that maybe no one’s ever heard of this city,
but if you have internet, and you’re able to put
your music onto YouTube, or Youku,
the whole world can listen to your music.
So it’s a good thing as well.
Now, you’ve worked with amazing people.
You’ve sung with Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson,
you know, Will.I.Am.
Pretty cool, huh?
Yeah, pretty cool.
Have you ever been starstruck?
Absolutely, yes, because all these people
who I’ve worked with, I love them.
I mean, I’m a fan of theirs.
Meeting Michael Jackson was an absolute,
I was in awe of him, really.
‘Cause I’m a 80s baby, right?
I love all things 80s, all the music from the 80s,
and of course in the 80s, Michael Jackson’s
a huge part of it, and I grew up listening
to Michael Jackson, and when he handpicked me
to perform in Korea with him for his charity concert,
and lucky enough to meet him backstage.
I remember I introduced myself very calmly,
hi Michael, I’m Coco Lee, and he said to me,
Coco, oh, I like your name.
Coco, yeah, I like it.
And he’s just so gentle, he’s just as gentle as so,
and he told me he likes my name.
I mean, wow, that’s coming from the biggest mega star
in the world, so that was really, really awesome.
Yeah, so, Michael Jackson, of course,
that was a dream come true to work with him.
But okay, the one that I was most shy was Ricky Martin.
I was really, really, really shy.
He had
Why was that?
Well, back then he was doing La Vida Loca,
and he is the hottest guy ever, right?
And I was on his Asia tour, I was his special guest,
and the song that we had to sing was Private Emotions.
And the first time, the first concert date
that we had to do this together, the moment I was on stage,
I looked into his eyes and I forgot all the lyrics.
And I just repeat the same line three times.
But of course, a lot of people didn’t notice,
but it was all because his eyes electrocuted me.
I swear he did.
She was the first Asian singer to perform at the Oscars
and the first Chinese recording artist
to be signed internationally by Sony.
Coco Lee tells us about her journey
from chubby schoolgirl to global pop diva.
I was more of the shy kid, always hiding,
and I would sing at home.
And it was my sister who said to my mom,
“I think Coco can sing.”
And so my mom encouraged me,
“You know, if you wanna sing, just sing it out.
“Just sing out loud and don’t be shy.”
But some of my influences are Whitney Houston,
Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Madonna.
So I would be at home and imitating them
and singing their music as well.
And that’s when my mom realized,
“Oh, my daughter can sing.”
So when you were little, imitating Madonna,
Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston,
what was your favorite song to sing?
Wow, there’s so many.
Let me see.
Madonna, there’s so many.
I would say Michael Jackson.

♪ Really turns me on ♪
♪ Got me off of my feet now, baby ♪
♪ All the things are gone ♪
It’s like, I just loved his music
’cause it gets me all excited.
Or Madonna.
Madonna was like, ♪ Holiday, celebrate ♪
So anything like the ’80s, it gets me really excited.
And so you entered a singing contest
here in Hong Kong in 1993.
1993, that was right after high school.
Why did you enter the contest?
Did you need the money or something?
It was, both of my sisters were in Hong Kong.
They came back here.
I wanted to come back to visit them
and I was thinking about singing.
The biggest stage that time was,
it was like a star search of Hong Kong.
And that’s where Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung,
they all came out from that.
And so I’m like, well, try my luck, try it out.
And I did.
I remember I was thinking, ah, they would never pick me.
I’m chubby, this chubby little girl from San Francisco
who could barely speak Cantonese.
And the song that I was gonna sing was an English song.
So I had a lot of disadvantage towards me.
But they gave me the call back
and I went in to sing for them.
And they said, you’re in.
I was first runner up.
I was very proud.
But on that stage, I felt no fear.
And it was such an incredible feeling to me.
How could I not be afraid, not nervous on such a big stage
where you have 20,000 people watching you?
And that’s when I felt this is where I belong.
This is where I’m most comfortable performing for people.
Now you sing in Mandarin, you sing in Cantonese,
you sing in English.
Could you speak all three languages
when you came back here in 1993?
Back then, back then.
Oh, back then.
Back then, Cantonese, a little bit weak.
Mandarin, I didn’t speak a word.
My first time of trying to speak Mandarin
was when they put me in Taiwan in 1994.
So my career really started in Taiwan.
That’s the place that gave me my start.
So it will always have a special place in my heart.
1994, June 15th was my first album,
the release of my first album.
And I remember the first song I recorded was
“I’m Still Your Lover”.
我依然是你的情人
And in the studio, the producer said to me,
“CoCo, you can’t sing like that.”
‘Cause I was singing with runs and ad-libs,
with a lot of ad-libs and stuff.
He felt that was just too R&B, too urban
for a simple ballad.
And I told him, I’m 18 years old,
and I said to him, “I’m sorry, this is me.
“This is how I sing.
“I cannot change my style to make it more commercial.
“This is really how I am as a singer.”
And I’m so happy that he gave me that opportunity
to try it out, sing in my way.
And I was lucky enough that it became a huge success.
And that’s how I got my break back then.
And Mandarin’s pretty good now.

You’ve packed stadiums of how many thousands now in China?
My biggest one was in Shanghai.
That was 80,000.
And when you have 80,000 people in a stadium,
the moment the riser came onto the stage
and I saw those people, they were like little ants.
But the energy of the crowd when they all scream
and cheer for you at the same time was, wow.
It was overwhelming.
I was so excited.
And that gives me that energy to perform even more,
you know, to give my heart out on that stage.
And yeah, it’s unforgettable.
And another first for you.
You’re the first Asian artist to be signed
by Sony Entertainment internationally.
Yes, yes, yes.
That was a proud moment.
Very happy, very honored to be the first Chinese artist
to be signed internationally to Sony.
It’s a first step for the Chinese, it really is.
Growing up listening to Whitney Houston,
all these great American artists,
but I’ve never seen an Asian face
that I can idolize as a kid.
But why not?
Ever since I was a singer,
I found that there are many, many talented artists
or musicians out here in Asia.
So it was just timing and having that opportunity.
And so I was lucky enough to have that chance back in 1998, 1999,
and to come out with the first album, “Just No Other Way,”
which brought me to a lot of different countries
and places that I never imagined I would be able to go
with a Chinese album and to gain fans all over the world.
And I was very blessed, very, very blessed.
Now, are you disappointed that even in 2012,
you know, we still don’t have, you know,
shall we say a best-selling Asian artist in the US?
Why?
You know, because the US market is a tough nut to crack.
It really is.
Because not only for Asian artists,
just look at some of the greatest artists in Europe,
Robbie Williams, you know, he’s great.
And it was hard for him as well.
Even, you know, back then, George Michael,
who was the biggest thing in the world,
could not crack that,
could not crack the market in the US.
So it’s just timing.
But, you know, I’m just very grateful for the opportunity
that I already had this chance
to become the first Asian artist to do this.
Yeah, and hopefully there’ll be many, many more.
And I’m sure, you know, in a very short amount of time
that we’ll be seeing a lot more Asian artists out there.
Coco Lee juggles music, endorsements, charity work,
and married life.
Taking a ride on Hong Kong’s iconic Star Ferry,
she reveals how she met one of Asia’s top CEOs,
Bruce Rokowitz, who became her husband,
and what he’s taught her about business.
We have a very special bond.
We have a special chemistry
and we are each other’s best friend.
And, you know, we talk about everything.
I learned a lot from him
and he’s learned how to sing from me.
He’s a great guy.
I really believe in fate.
I really do believe in fate.
I just finished doing a film then.
And I’m, you know, I’m like a homebuddy.
I don’t like to go out.
And my sister forced me that night to go out to celebrate.
So she took me to this really popular restaurant, nightclub,
and, you know, just like dancing, dancing, dancing.
And then I met, I saw a friend that I haven’t seen in five years.
Comes up to me and say,
“Hey, I got a friend for you.
“I want you to meet.”
Sure, okay, whatever.
And then it was Bruce.
But I remember when I met him,
we hit it off right away.
He was very charming, very funny.
I find humor very, very important in a guy.
And he was very funny.
And yeah, I liked his energy.
It was like, I felt he was, you know,
good, positive type of guy.
So Bruce, you know, he’s learned to sing from you.
Have you learned about business from him?
A lot.
You know, back then, my world was all about music,
the entertainment world.
And because of him,
we are surrounded by a lot of business people,
business leaders.
And, you know, quite often I would ask them questions
about the business.
Now I learn a lot about stock market.
Yeah, I learn a lot about the business world,
which, you know, enrich my life.
So my world is not only one-dimensional.
It’s, you know, it’s got lots of things going on.
Because as a performer, you’re a businesswoman as well.
You have endorsements.
You take a look at contracts.
Yes, yes.
I try to be more business savvy,
but of course he gives me a lot of good advice
that I take sometimes.
No, he gives me a lot of good advice.
And I have a great team that helps me.
We brainstorm a lot together of what is, you know,
the next big project that we should be working on.
Let’s talk about endorsements,
because, you know, you’re working with Estee Lauder.
How do you choose the company you work with?
A lot of times they come to,
they will come to my manager.
Working with Estee Lauder was one of those,
it’s very much like a dream come true,
because ever since I was a kid,
I never forget this story.
When I was 16, there’s this girl
who sits next to me in class.
She always smells so good.
And I said to her, “What is that?
“Is that a perfume?”
She said, “No, it’s a body lotion.”
And she told me it was Estee Lauder Beautiful.
So ever since I was 16 years old,
I’ve been using that body lotion to this day.
And so when they came to me
and they would like me to be one of their spokesperson,
I was like, “Yes, absolutely!”
You know, I was over the moon to be working with them.
A great company that I’m really a fan of.
Yeah, and you’ve also worked in the past,
Chanel, Mac Mara, La Mer.
Yeah, a lot of wonderful brands.
Do you make sure that these brands
also have some socially conscious programs as well?
Well, first of all, they are brands that women love.
We adore these brands.
And so to be a part of that brand,
it’s a big compliment and a big honor.
But sometimes, for me, other than just endorsements,
I’m very focused on giving back to the society,
which is charity.
Right now, I’m going to be the spokesperson
for the Pink Revolution for Cancer Fund,
who is the biggest cancer charity organization in Hong Kong.
And I learn a lot from them, I really did.
Me and Bruce, we have been big supporters of them for many years.
And we’re big donors, but I felt I want to do something.
I want to be able to physically help.
And so my role is to bring attention to the media
and then to bring to everybody,
especially the women of Hong Kong,
that with early detection,
we can actually help ourselves to,
we don’t have to get to a stage where it’s too late.
So it’s very important.
CoCo Lee wants to be a role model for having it all,
being an independent woman,
having a successful career and a strong marriage.
She shares her views on how to achieve that
and tells us what she wants to achieve in the future.
So tell me about your new album.
What kind of music is it?
So is it in English, is it in Mandarin?
It’s a fusion.
It’s gonna be a Mandarin album, mainly Mandarin.
And we might throw in a few different languages on there.
But we’re still playing around with different ideas.
I’m working with producers that I’ve never worked with before
and I think we’re gonna definitely have some new chemistry.
We’re trying new sounds and I think it’s very, very exciting.
Favorite song on the album?
Do you have one?
Not yet, not yet.
But you know, I was thinking about my career, right?
When I first started, when I first started in Taiwan,
there’s some really, really funny stories
because when I started, my company was very small.
It was a very small company that did not have much budget.
So I did not come from like a big company, very glamorous.
It was like, we had to take little mopeds.
When I went to TV interviews,
I was on a moped with my manager, seriously.
And I had to wear a helmet.
Those little mopeds in Taiwan, I wore a little helmet.
It was hot, sweaty summertime.
And I remember we were in traffic.
We finally got to the TV station
and I took off my helmet and my face was half dirty.
Like as if I have like the five o’clock shadow.
And it was, but I had so many of those stories
where it wasn’t so glamorous at the very beginning.
But I’m so glad that I had those tough times
because then you cherish everything that you have today.
Absolutely.
Can you give me a little taste of this new album?
Just a little chord.
I wish I could, but I can’t.
But I’ll give you one of my most favorite songs.
No, actually the song that I sang for the competition
was “Run to You” by Whitney Houston, my most favorite.

Now, when we say the name Coco Lee,
what do you want people to think?
What do you wanna inspire?
I’d like to be a positive role model
for young girls and women out there
that you can have it all.
You can have it all.
My mother was a great role model for me.
My father passed away before I was born.
And so my mother, she had to be a very tough woman
to raise three kids on her own.
But she’s always been very career oriented.
And she always taught us ethics.
Work ethics is very important.
You gotta have strong principles.
You gotta work hard.
You gotta set goals for yourself
and work hard towards those goals.
And I believe in that still to this day.
When I work, I give everything to my work.
And being professional is very important.
But what I mean by have it all is,
people think after you get married,
you don’t need to work anymore.
I don’t see it that way.
I feel that I am an independent woman.
My career is very important to me.
My fans are very important to me.
My music is very important to me.
It’s just I’m very blessed that my husband’s very supportive of all that.
And so I can continue to do what I love to do.
In the modern world, there’s a lot of successful
career women who are married and have children.
And those are the women that I really look up to.
If we can have a crystal ball,
and you as Coco Lee in 2012,
looking at that little girl back in 1993,
entering that singing competition,
what do you think the two biggest differences are?
Biggest differences?
I think now I learn a good balance
between work hard, play hard.
And that you gotta have a balance
because I used to be, it’s just all work.
I don’t take breaks.
I do not take vacations.
I was a workaholic.
And, but then I learned life is,
you know, life is too short.
You never know.
And so now I would have a good balance.
I gotta have some time that’s with my family,
with my mother.
Sometimes that’s with Bruce, my husband.
And then there’s time that I’m dedicated to my work.
So you gotta have a good balance and enjoy life
and enjoy everything you do.
And, you know, don’t take yourself too seriously in a way.
And just try to relax, but enjoy.
What else do you wanna achieve in your career?
You’ve already done so much.
I think continue to be a positive role model.
And to come up with great music.
Use my music to make people happy.
And is there still an artist you wanna perform with?
Is there anyone out there that you haven’t performed with,
you still wanna sing with?
Oh, so many, so many.
There’s so many great artists out there that I love.
They inspire me.
Beyonce inspires me.
Rihanna.
There’s a lot of great artists.
Lady Gaga also.
I mean, I love them all.
And I listen to their music and they inspire me.
I would love to work with them.

我不能改变我的风格以使它更商业化
这就是我作为一名歌手的风格
我很高兴他给了我那个机会
来尝试唱出自己的方式
